November 4, 2021  Home Care Ontario, the voice of home care in OntarioTM, applauds government’s recognition that Ontario’s home care sector is a key pillar of our health care system as witnessed by the historic $548M investment in today’s Fall Economic Statement. Home Care Ontario shares the government’s vision of giving seniors and other vulnerable individuals greater access to home care through additional capacity, and strongly urges government to target some of this investment into closing the current wage disparity that exists between home care and other parts of the health care system.

Home care offers the supports needed to serve and safely keep Ontarians (over 1M patients) at home every year. These supports include nursing, therapy, personal support, respiratory therapy, infusion pharmacy and much more. Over many years, the sector has been chronically underfunded, which has resulted in an exodus of staff to higher wage environments. Addressing the pay disparity that currently exists is absolutely critical to supporting home care to recruit and retain skilled staff. Ultimately, doing so is the key to improving patient care and helping seniors age in their own homes – where they want to be.

Today, Personal Support Workers (PSWs) and Nurses can earn much more in a Long-Term Care (LTC) home or in a hospital than they do working in home care. In fact, the government’s Long-Term Care Staffing Study found that both PSWs and nurses make significantly more in LTC than in home care for the same level of acuity and care needs.

96% of seniors recently surveyed said they want to age at home, and addressing the wage disparity is a key part of making this strong desire a reality.  Home Care Ontario will continue to work with government on additional investments to raise wages for home care workers and improve seniors care in Ontario.
